Future projects on the relationship between politics and economics

In the last few months, I’ve been teaching myself economic theory. For one my dissertation deals extensively with the concept of blockade under the older understanding of international law. Therefore, I need to understand better the conditions of global trade prior to WWI.

Also, Trump’s tariffs have proven to be a source of a lot of consternation on the Right. I had a long debate back in April with several Austrian economists here at Hillsdale on the issue of trade and tariffs. It was a spirited and enlightening back and forth. The upshot of that conversation was that I have done a lot of reading on economic theory and history since then.

Put simply, I felt I needed to know a lot more. Now I do. Which is good.

Political life obviously intersects with economic affairs. People are always talking about the unemployment rate, GDP, housing prices, interest rates, inflation, and cheap labor. People like money and they virtually always want more of it. It is my job, as a political scientist, to have something useful to say on these subjects.

I’m still working on sorting out my thoughts on these matters, but once I complete my dissertation, I plan on working on an essay that discusses the challenge of integrating economic and political life. Below are some potential topics of interest to me.
