I love discovering politicians. It’s a rather common experience. I’ll read a NYT story and they’ll reference “So and so, Senator from Wherever” and I’ll google them and then discover that they’ve been in power for years but that I’ve never heard their name.
Today’s discovery is Senator Cortez Masto from Nevada. She’s been in office for five years and I have literally no idea who she is. In fact, as this NYT story points out—neither do the residents of Nevada.
Clavijo and Mejia could not name Nevada’s incumbent senator up for reelection — Cortez Masto, whose seat is critical if the Democrats want to maintain control of the Senate.
Despite five years in the Senate and eight years as Nevada’s attorney general, Cortez Masto remains unknown by a broad swath of the Nevada electorate as a result of her longtime aversion to publicity, cautious political demeanor and Nevada’s transient voters.
But I also learned this tidbit: she’s the country’s first Latina Senator. So let’s take a look at this historic Person of Color and groundbreaking hidden figure who is breaking through glass ceilings and trailblazing her way through our political system:
¡Ay chihuahua! ¡Si se puede! Just bask in the Latinx-ness.
Just kidding. Mrs. Masto is as white as the wind driven snow.
I get serious Elizabeth Warren vibes here.
I know literal fresh off the boat Italians who have a better claim to be “Persons of Color” than these two clowns. But here we are, politicians “brownwashing” themselves in order to grift for votes.
This is nothing new. Barack Obama built a whole career as the “first black president” who would finally redeem America’s racist past even though none of his ancestors were ever held as slaves in America. His father was an immigrant from east Africa, for goodness sake! Kenya is literally thousands of miles away from the Western coasts of Africa where blacks were first sold into slavery.
Like I said, we live in clown world.
For instance, here is GK Butterfield, the former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, from 2015 to 2017:
I want to see the 23 and Me results, just sayin’.
Of course, this isn’t really about genetics or even race. Being able to claim POC status is entirely dependent on whether you play ball with the liberal elite. Blacks like Clarence Thomas (who actually was descended from slaves) are the target of extremely vicious criticism from the Left. There are no anti-racist brownie points to be had there! Nancy Pelosi said this last week, for instance, that Thomas never should have been appointed to the Supreme Court. Imagine if a conservative said that about Thurgood Marshall and you’ll understand exactly how this works.
