I know a thing or two about illegal immigrant workers. In 2016, after graduating from college and while waiting orders for The Basic School, I got a job as a groundskeeper for a retirement home in the central valley in California.
I was part of a crew of four men servicing about 100 homes. All of us were White: two older full-time guys and two summer workers, me and this other kid named James. The job wasn't easy: we mowed lawns, trimmed trees, fixed sprinkler systems, picked up trash, and otherwise worked our asses off in 105 degree California summer heat.
I made $10 an hour.
As it turned out, James was a real piece of shit. He constantly showed up late, lied to the crew boss about damaging equipment, repeatedly took sick days to get out of work, and was always on break. He once told me he didn't even know why he had this job because he could make just as much living on welfare.
Like I said, he was a real shitbird.
Eventually, my boss had enough and fired him. But our crew needed more help. Instead of offering more money for the role and getting a better worker, my boss had a genius idea: he would hire an illegal immigrant.
The guy they had in mind, we'll call him José, had worked for the retirement center before but had left to pick fruit. Now he was apparently unemployed again and they wanted to bring him on. My boss loved this guy, "He works so hard. The Mexicans are all great! Wonderful workers." On and on it went.
So they bring this illegal in to offer him the role, and he shows up in this dingy 1999 Chevy van with his daughter and her infant in tow.
He can't speak a lick of English so he needs his daughter there to translate. Mind you José has lived in America for more than 10 years.
His daughter is fat and surly, trying to manage this kid who is out of control while she negotiates with my gringo boss on getting her father work.
I'm watching all this and stewing. Here I am, doing everything the right way. I pay income taxes, medicare, social security, and CA state unemployment insurance.
Meanwhile, my employer is trying to negotiate the same base salary in cash under the table for this illegal immigrant because he just "has to have" this guy. My boss is technically breaking a ton of federal and state laws relating to taxation, fraud, immigration fraud, employee "rights," and who knows what else.
But none of it matters. Illegals and those who employee them don't need to follow the law. They're special. But I, on the other hand, absolutely need to follow the law. That's absolutely certain. I am White, after all. I am supposed to pay taxes and follow all the rules.
I have privilege, you know? So I need to be hitched to the plow to help everyone else. Something something racism, the disadvantaged, bigotry, etc.
Anyway, they work out the whole employment thing with José the Illegal, break a ton of laws in the process, and then José... just never shows up. He disappears completely. He never took the job.
The whole ordeal was eye-opening. It was a window into the dysfunction of modern American life.
-The White guy with a HS diploma didn't want to work because he could get welfare instead.
-My employer had no problem solving the problem by breaking about a dozen laws in the process.
-The illegal himself couldn't be bothered to learn English, had brought a ton of his family to America, many of whom were now my fellow citizens (thank you, birthright citizenship), and then, it turns out, he wasn't actually a good worker at all!
The one constant in this process was that I got fucked. Instead of offering me more pay to work harder to pick up the slack from the loser, my employer decided to grift off the freely available illegal foreign labor on tap. And he effectively gave this guy a pay raise because he didn't have to pay taxes.
I would love to make cash under the table, too! How come that wasn't an offer for me? If illegals get to screw the IRS, why shouldn't I?
As a White man in America I am constantly getting shafted by anyone and everyone. The whole system is set up to make me a pay pig for literally everyone else in the country.
I need to pay so shitty White people can live on welfare. I need to pay so shitty Mexicans can live on welfare. I need to pay so old people don't have to save for retirement and health care. I need to take a pay cut so the illegals can "find a better life."
I also need to pay for my own retirement and health care because the government “entitlements” aren't gonna be there in 40 years. lmao if you think otherwise. As it happens, I am not entitled to those entitlements. Funny how that works.
And you know what, I am sick of this system. I am sick of the people who built it. I am sick of giving bailouts to every sad sack sob story who comes here whining about their problems. What about my problems? Does anyone care about those?
No, of course not. Because I take care of my self. I solve my own problems. I pay for my own health insurance, pay for my own housing, buy my own food, and help my friends when they are in need because I hope they would do the same if I were in real trouble.
And don't get me wrong: I don't mind taking care of myself. That's my responsibility. I like being free. I like doing meaningful work. But other people need to do the same. The social contract isn't one-sided. All the burden should not fall on me and my friends.
I would have been better off if José never came to America. The benefit that foreign labor offers--cheaper goods--does not offset the vast social costs that come with flooding my country with foreigners who don't share my way of life, vote for communism, and then spit on me for not wanting the same.
We need a new social contract, a rejuventaed understanding of what it means to be an American. We need to clearly delineate between citizen and foreigner, neighbor and stranger, friend and enemy.
We need to fix this problem before we do anything else. Immigration policy isn't about the good of the immigrants. It should be entirely oriented toward maximizing benefits to Americans!
And right now the primary benefit we need is far fewer foreigners in this country. We are deeply divided. The country is hurting. We need change. We need to focus on ourselves.
My message to Congress is simple: repeal Hart-Celler, end birthright citizenship, deport the illegals, and slash new naturalizations by 90%. Once you do all that we can talk about what a future guest worker program might look like.
But not before.
American political leaders need to prove themselves. They need to show that they genuinely want what is good for ME, what is good for AMERICANS. America first means Americans first. Always.
"I take care of my self. I solve my own problems. I pay for my own health insurance, pay for my own housing, buy my own food, and help my friends when they are in need because I hope they would do the same if I were in real trouble."
The Smithsonian Institution has called this "acting white." How about a law that says all immigrants are required to "act white?"
Thank you for hitting this bent rusty nail squarely on its head!
The paragraph: "My message to Congress is simple: repeal Hart-Celler, end birthright citizenship, deport the illegals, and slash new naturalizations by 90%. Once you do all that we can talk about what a future guest worker program might look like." is the perfect summation to the immigration argument. Bravo!!
