Our entire current foreign policy is an abomination. Our “elected” officials care about these foreign countries, because that’s where they get fat stacks, individual Americans can’t pay that kind of money. That’s one part of it. Their worship of Mammon and Sodom is another problem. Almost all our overseas bases should be closed and recapped at home. I would start with our bases in Britain and Germany. Israel can handle themselves, I want us to handle ourselves.

It was all signaling, and signaling against what he did in his two terms. He had the chance to reign in the military industrial complex. Instead, at a moment of unquestioned American power, he refrained from doing anything substantive. He pushed a few coups but no revolutions. The coups were eventually undone. The Communists were being trounced globally at the beginning of his term, and were dominant the world over by the end of it.
Conservatives love taking old obvious liberal positions and retconning them into crypto-conservatism.
Well it was invaded by the USA in 1812, so clearly they thought it was worthwhile. They discovered peaceful vassalisation was a better strategy though (1945).

The Anti-Federalists were right to want an ally to defend against Britain. Washington's speech was a way of saying that America should cozy back up to their oppressors because it suited the purposes of Federalist/Wall Street merchants.
I do have one quibble and it is not minor. The circle around America is too big. America's borders exclude Mexico and central america. It is high time we remember that too.
